O. L. Luther Unit, TDCJ code P2, is a male state prison at 1800 Luther Drive in Navasota. TDCJ lists it in Grimes County about ten miles southwest of Navasota, off Highway 6 on FM 2. The facility opened in July 1982 and has a stated capacity of 1,316.
Its listed custody groups are G1, G2, G3, and Outside Trusty. Those classifications describe confinement and work status, not a promised release date. A person can leave Luther without leaving TDCJ. Transfer to Pack or another state unit ends custody at Luther but continues the prison term. A discharge, parole release, or mandatory-supervision release is different. TDCJ may also process release through an assigned site based on the approved plan and legal county of residence.

The Grimes County Sheriff does not calculate Luther sentences, issue state release certificates, or maintain the TDCJ offender history. Projected Release Date is a state calculation. TDCJ defines it as the date Classification and Records projects the person will leave incarceration if parole does not occur sooner. Sentence structure, offense and offense date, time credits, mandatory-supervision rules, Board action, detainers, new judgments, programs, and audit changes can affect it.
Projected does not mean scheduled. Parole Eligibility Date marks when review may occur, not approval. Next Review follows certain denials. Maximum Expiration Date is the sentence-end calculation. Scheduled Release Date reflects a later processing stage but can still change. Actual Release Date records the completed event.
After approval, TDCJ checks the release plan, county requirements, discipline, special needs, required programs, conditions, and other restrictions. The certificate review and calculation can take time. A favorable Board vote does not prove that the person walked out of Luther that day. Luther and Pack Release Geography
Luther and Wallace Pack Unit are co-located near Navasota and share agricultural operations. Grimes County Jail sits in Anderson. This three-facility geography creates a common records error: a searcher sees Navasota or Grimes County and contacts the Sheriff about a state-prison release.
Luther's 1982 opening and its CHANGES/Pre-Release and Reentry Planning programs make it locally distinct. Yet state ownership remains the key fact. TDCJ controls placement, projected dates, certificate processing, transfers, parole preparation, and discharge records. A person's legal county of residence may influence placement or release planning, so the prison's physical county does not guarantee a Grimes release destination.

TDCJ materials describe several formal artifacts. A person completing a prison sentence or parole can receive a Discharge Certificate or Parole Certificate. After O. L. Luther Release
Parole and mandatory supervision continue the sentence in the community under conditions. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles decides the release, while TDCJ Parole Division handles supervision. Full discharge differs because the term has ended. Probation is a court-imposed county or district status and is not the normal label for release from a TDCJ prison sentence.
State IVSS may show parole review, Board vote, expected or actual release, warrants, returns, and end-of-supervision events. A parole warrant or residential placement can alter a person's physical status. Ask whether the state outcome was parole, mandatory supervision, discharge, or transfer before describing where the person went.
